Privacy
The site works without an account. We count visits with Google Analytics, and you can turn that off. Some pages show sponsored cards.
What we do not collect
- No names or email addresses. There are no accounts.
- No advertising cookies. The site sets none, and neither does the service behind the sponsored cards.
- Nothing you enter in a calculator. The numbers and choices stay in your browser unless you share a result.
- No pet names, photos or captions. What you add to a result card is not sent to us or to Google Analytics.
How we count visits
We use Google Analytics to count visits and to see which pages and tools people use. It records:
- The pages you open and how you got here, for example from a search engine or a link on another site.
- The tools you use and the share buttons you click.
- The links to other sites you click, and whether you scroll to the end of a page.
- Your rough location, such as country and city. Google works it out from your IP address.
- Your device and browser, including the operating system, language and screen size.
For a share button, Google Analytics gets the name of the button and of the tool. When the button opens Facebook, Pinterest, X or WhatsApp, Google Analytics also gets the address of the share link, which holds your result. Google Analytics never gets the pet name, the photo or the caption.
A shared result has its own address. The address holds the result and, for an age result, the age and size entered. Google Analytics records that address when someone opens the link. When that page asks for sponsored cards, it sends the address without the age and size.
Google Analytics sets two cookies in your browser, _ga and _ga_SCL6V3WKE2. They let it recognize a return visit and keep the pages of one visit together. They expire two years after your last visit, or sooner in some browsers.
The advertising features of Google Analytics are switched off. It sets no advertising cookies, and the site tells Google not to use visit data to personalize ads.
Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services.
How to turn Google Analytics off
You can turn Google Analytics off for this site. The choice is kept in this browser only. If you clear your site data, or your browser clears it for you, turn it off again.
On a computer you can also install the Google Analytics opt-out add-on, which works on every site. Blocking or deleting cookies in your browser settings stops a return visit from being recognized. The calculators and guides work without cookies.
Sponsored cards
Some pages can show blocks of cards labeled Sponsored. The cards are ads. Each one links to an advertiser's site and opens in a new tab.
One sponsored card can sit in a corner of the screen. It may play a short video without sound, and it has buttons to close it or minimize it.
The cards come from an advertising service. When you open a page with a block, your browser asks the service for cards. It sends:
- Which block is asking and which site it is on.
- The page you are on, for example /guides/, and its language.
Which cards you see depends on the page. The service sets no cookies and gives your browser no ID. The cards keep a page count in your browser, listed under What is stored in your browser.
The service counts:
- A view, when at least half of a card has been on your screen for one second.
- A click on a card.
- For a video card, the start of the clip, how far it played and whether you closed the player.
- For some advertisers, a purchase or sign-up that follows a click. The advertiser reports it to the service.
With each count the service saves the card, the block, the site, the time and your country. It also saves what your browser reports about itself: its name and version, your operating system and your type of device.
The service receives your IP address with each request and can keep it in its server logs. Its statistics keep your country, not the address.
When you click a card, you go to the advertiser through the service. The service records the click and sends you on. The advertiser is not told which page you came from. With some advertisers the link carries a random code for that one click. It lets the advertiser report a later purchase or sign-up to the service, which matches it to that click. The advertiser's site may set its own cookies.
What is stored in your browser
- Your choice of light or dark theme.
- The boxes you check in the new pet checklist, and whether it is set to dog or cat.
- The two Google Analytics cookies, _ga and _ga_SCL6V3WKE2.
- Your choice to turn Google Analytics off, if you make it.
- A count of the pages with a sponsored block that you have opened in this tab. If you close or minimize a sponsored card, that choice too.
The theme, the checklist and the Google Analytics choice are kept in your browser's local storage. The page count and the choice about a card are kept in session storage, which your browser empties when you close the tab. Clearing site data in your browser settings removes everything on this list.
Photos and names you add
The photo and details you add to a lost pet poster are processed in your browser. They are not uploaded. The photo you add to a result card stays on your device in the same way. A pet name you type for a card is drawn on the card and added to the suggested post. A card reaches a social network only when you post it yourself.
Hosting
The site is served by Cloudflare. Cloudflare receives every request and the IP address it comes from, and uses them to deliver pages and protect the site. See the Cloudflare privacy policy.
Fonts, images and scripts are served from this site, with two exceptions. The Google Analytics tag loads from Google. The sponsored cards, with their script, pictures and videos, load from outside this site.
Links to other sites
Guides link to official sources, maps and retailers, and sponsored cards link to advertisers. Those sites have their own privacy policies.
